On Monday, ongoing rescue efforts at the Uttarakhand tunnel collapse site in Uttarkashi district utilized the Defence Research Development Organisation’s Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Daksh. Specifically designed for challenging terrains, Daksh, a versatile tool, is accustomed to detecting and managing improvised explosive devices (IEDs), surveying nuclear and chemical contamination, and handling hazardous objects. With ladder-climbing capabilities, it operates for three continuous hours over distances ranging from 100 to 500 meters, aiding bomb disposal units of the military, police, and paramilitary forces.
Daksh’s motorized pan-tilt platform allows remote control within a 500-meter range, featuring a manipulator arm capable of handling hazardous objects up to 20kg from 2.5 meters and 9kg from 4 meters away.
Noteworthy is its ability to climb stairs, navigate steep slopes, and withstand blast impacts with durable rubber wheels. Equipped with cameras, IED handling tools, nuclear biological chemical (NBC) reconnaissance systems, a master control station (MCS), and a shotgun, Daksh, along with the MCS, is transported via a specially designed carrier vehicle. In tandem with the DRDO’s efforts, the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is installing a new 6-inch food supply pipeline, while Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) is working on a separate vertical pipeline for essential supplies.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has constructed an access road to facilitate RVNL’s work. Additionally, the Tehri Hydroelectric Development Corporation (THDC) is set to begin micro tunneling from the Barkot end, supported by Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL), which will undertake vertical drilling. Equipment from Gujarat and Odisha has been brought in, with the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) initiating preliminary work for vertical drilling from the Barkot end. Simultaneously, BRO is constructing an access road to mobilize machines for ONGC and SJVNL. The trapped workers, receiving essentials through a compressor pipeline, are now anticipating increased food supplies with ongoing infrastructure developments.
