Following India’s triumphant T20 World Cup final win against South Africa, which ended an 11-year ICC title drought, Rohit and Kohli announced their retirements from T20I cricket. Despite stepping back from the shortest format, they confirmed their intention to continue playing in other formats. Gambhir believes their exceptional ability to perform in major tournaments will be crucial for India, especially in the upcoming tour of Australia and next year’s Champions Trophy.
In his first press conference on Monday, Gambhir stated, “I think they have shown what they can deliver on the big stage, whether it’s the T20 World Cup or the 50-over World Cup. Both of these players have a lot of cricket left in them. With the Champions Trophy in 2025 and a significant tour of Australia in November 2024, they would obviously be motivated. And if they maintain their fitness, they could very well be part of the 2027 ODI World Cup.”
He emphasized that the decision ultimately lies with the players themselves. “It’s a very personal decision. I can’t say how much cricket is left in them. It’s up to them to decide how much they can contribute to the team’s success. But given what Virat and Rohit can deliver, they still have a lot of cricket left. They are still world-class players, and any team would want to have them for as long as possible.”
The 2027 ODI World Cup is set to take place in Africa, jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Rohit Sharma has yet to win an ODI World Cup, having come close last year before Australia dashed India’s hopes in the final. He was not part of the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squad when India lifted their second ODI title at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where Kohli played a crucial role in the final against Sri Lanka.
Recently, Rohit confirmed his intention to continue playing ODIs and Tests “at least for a while,” during a promotional event in the US.
Gambhir’s first assignment with the Indian team will be the Sri Lanka tour, with India scheduled to play three T20Is and three ODIs starting on July 27.
