The state government has disbursed financial aid totaling Rs 56 crore through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, aimed at encouraging students to use electric vehicles. Under the scheme, students from Grade 9 to college are eligible for Rs 12,000 in assistance to purchase battery-powered two-wheelers. Additionally, 925 beneficiaries have each received Rs 48,000 under the ‘Tri-Wheel Vehicle Scheme,’ which supports rickshaw drivers and small entrepreneurs. So far, this program has distributed Rs 4 crore.
Officials stated, “To further enhance the electric vehicle ecosystem, the Gujarat State Electric Vehicle Policy 2021 provides financial incentives for setting up EV charging stations, expanding the infrastructure necessary for widespread adoption.”
They added that the Gujarat government plans to offer financial assistance for 7,500 two-wheelers and 1,000 tri-wheelers by 2024-25. The Gujarat State Electric Vehicle Policy 2021 also promotes the establishment of charging stations for electric vehicles, emphasizing the low operational costs and environmental advantages of EVs. For example, the running cost for electric two-wheelers is estimated at about Rs 0.20 per kilometre.
In 2023, EV sales in Gujarat rose by 28 percent compared to the previous year, with 88,619 vehicles sold. This marks a substantial increase from the 10,885 units sold in 2021, reflecting a 714 percent growth over the last three years.
